Angels in the Atmosphere
Angels are present in every religion of every culture worldwide. They are referenced in mythology, folklore, and Scripture passages in the Bible. Angels are messengers of divine proportions, bearing communications originating in the Creator’s perfection. Historically, their other functions have been to inspire, guide, and protect human beings. Angels are not only all-knowing, but also magnificently all-loving.
Angels are stunning to behold. Their exquisite beauty renders them indescribable. Sanjay, a poet with autism, confirmed, “When we speak about angels, our words are inadequate.” In traditional religious depiction, angels appear to mortals in all their winged and haloed and glowing glory. It is not unrealistic that such an ancient entity should appear in this manner, in modern times, to our jaded eyes. Sanjay added, “The question is not if they exist but how we recognize their presence in our lives.” Many believe angels are able to assume whatever appearance is most palatable for us to receive them, without being conspicuous if they so choose. Will, a brilliant young adult with autism, agreed, “Angels do not come in white robes and wings but in the guise of people we have loved. The angels know we will welcome them if they look like people we can love.”
Angels have never been human, but, on occasion, they can take human form. There are many recent books filled with anecdotes of angels intervening and aiding others in both direct and subtle ways. In Pretending to be Normal, Dr. Liane Holliday Willey, a person self-identified with Asperger’s Syndrome, relates an experience with such a savior in a time of crisis, even though in her book she does not ascribe any spiritual allusions to the incident.
Liane accompanied her husband on a business trip and became terribly disoriented when venturing out alone into San Francisco. She soon found herself lost in an unsafe part of town, being converged upon by a crowd of homeless people. In her moment of greatest duress, a well-dressed and very large stranger driving an expensive car appeared next to her. His mere presence provided her protection from harm and enabled her to calm and focus. The man seemed to know how to redirect her back to her hotel in the very clear, concrete manner that she would best understand. He then stood by as she returned to her car and drove off. Liane also mentions how she still sees him in dreams in which she replays the incident.
In another instance, Liane was rescued from an uncertain encounter with an intruder in her university classroom early one morning. At a critical moment, a student just happened into the room and intervened any potential altercation.
Over dinner with Patrick and his family (whom I’ve mentioned previously), I discussed development of this book project and gave examples of the divine experiences of others, including contact with angels. At this, Patrick’s eyes lit up and he became quite elated. Seemingly filled with unspoken knowledge, he bounced up and down in his chair with joy.
On another evening, fourteen-year-old Kevin reacted similarly when I had the same conversation with him.
